The practice was approached to design a unique multi-use office and entertainment suite in rural Cheshire, designed for the wider benefits of homeworking.
The Brown Barn sits within the green belt of High Legh, near Knutsford. Positioned alongside an existing Grade II listed farmhouse, which has been substantially extended and altered over time, with associated outbuildings, including a dutch barn, stables with a courtyard and coal shed.
The scheme replaces a nondescript stables block in a manner which compliments and is subservient to the existing family residence, referencing simple vernacular agricultural buildings in a clear, uncompromising way.
A single, natural material unifies the external walls, whilst large windows frame views of the surrounding fields. Sliding ‘barn’ doors open or conceal the spaces within, offering intimacy, privacy, and flexibility. High quality pared back materials internally compliment the exterior form and detailing.
The project was submitted for planning in September 2020.
