The Kitchen Room is a project for people on a smaller budget who enjoy being hands-on, managing trades, and still striving for high-quality results that can rival projects using a main contractor.
The project involved reconfiguring a rear middle-terraced property in the heart of Urmston, Trafford. The design squared off the existing lean-to extension, maximizing the dark garden area and bringing it back into the house. Large openings, framed by simple, slimline frames, fill the space with natural light.
The design transforms a dark, isolated kitchen into a vibrant, open-plan space for socializing. This renovation can be the catalyst for a more inviting atmosphere throughout the house.
A kitchen island takes center stage in the extension, with a dining table positioned to enjoy the garden through a large, transom-and-mullion-free window. The extension's flat roof features a large, perfectly centered skylight that contrasts dramatically with the heavier concrete base, flooding the room with natural light.
Before our involvement, the client had previously done work to the upstairs bathroom's layout with joinery work carried out by Sophie and Joseph.
The journey began with the planning application in 2021. Site work started in summer 2023 and completed in Spring 2024. The approximate budget was £65,000 for everything, including windows, kitchen, cladding, etc. We received approximate quotes of £100,000 to £120,000.
