Nicolas Road involved the ground floor re-structuring and first floor refurbishment of a semi-detached property in Chorlton, Manchester. The works involved turning a house with a small dining room and separate kitchen into a large, orchestrated room with zones for functional areas such as kitchen dining, living room and utility room. The enlargement has allowed the property to breathe, and the owners now have a logical flow between all habitable spaces.
The ceiling linking the extension to the existing house remains at a consistent height throughout and therefore provides a seamless internal finish with no intruding beams or bulkheads. A large sky light above the dining room together with large near 5m wide bifold doors floods the room with natural.
Further to the side extension, the living room, hallway, stairs, and all rooms including the bathroom upstairs were all given a complete refresh.
Externally all the windows have been replaced, with the new extension tied into the new house with the use of zinc, which provides a purposeful contrast between the old house and new extension.
The interior scheme is Scandinavian inspired with touches of light timber throughout.
The project will always remain close to my heart, as it was the first built project of the practice and it was the catalyst for the practice starting the process for a change of direction from commercial project to small scale residential.
A massive thank you to our wonderful clients, along with Gorilla Construction for bringing our design to life, and of course thanks to our friend and photographer Paul Karalius.
